The Dangers of Fireworks PDF Print E-mail

Sadly on Saturday 29th October 2005 one of our adopted dogs Bridget tragically lost her life due to fireworks.

Whilst out walking fireworks were let off near to them, Bridget was so frightened she broke loose from her owner and started running. After 3 hours of searching for her, they found her on a dual carriageway after being hit by a car.

As you can imagine this has totally devastated Bridgets owners and all of us at the rescue.

Fireworks are now no longer just used as a November the 5th celebration, they are now used on Birthdays, Christmas and New Year etc. and for those dogs and animals that are terrified, it is not only a miserable experience for them it can also become life threatening.

We would like to urge all our owners as well as other dog owners, to be extra vigilant during these times, this is the second dog that we have lost in a year, and I am sure no one would like there to be a third!

1. Please at all times keep your dog on a lead.

2.If possible, take them for their walks during daylight hours, or before any known bonfire parties begin.

3. Also ensure all gates and fences are secure, before letting them out into the garden, if a dog is frightened, they will run.

4. If you know your dog is frightened of fireworks and you are worried, contact your Veterinary Surgeon, they will help advise you on how to keep your dog calm.

And finally we would all like to send our deepest sympathy to Bridgets owners during this time, and with your help we we try and ensure this sort of tragedy does not happen to anyone else's much loved pet.
